Classic Day – This Is The Way

It has to be, that there is a sound where Pale Saints could achieve something spectacular on their debut release, The Comforts Of Madness. The percussion and lucid guitar is something that on its own, can be manipulated to orchestrate this dream state.

Opening with “Way The World Is,” the initial sounds come directly from the raging percussion that is a speeding locomotive silver bullet that flies out from the tunnel. It catches the audience off guard but Chris Cooper on percussion is a beast that lays the stonework and bricks for musical foundations. Then as the guitar from Graeme Naysmith and the bass/vocals from Ian Masters begin to shout into the void alongside, Pale Saints acquires a full line-up that is as illustrative as it is doused in the flames of New Wave.

Much of The Comforts Of Madness are transitional tracks that segue perfectly from one to the other. “Way The World Is” does not miss a note when it transfers the energy and prowess into “You Tear The World In Two.” A beautiful record for its execution, “You Tear The World In Two” is a direct link into the low-tuned but formulaic bass-heavy piece.

It feels loose on an instrumentalist standpoint, but the lyrics here are poetic and extend a velvet hand through the misted curtains. Describing, “Tear the world in two and choose a half. But look inside you, you know what you are.” With an instrumental that begins to add more gasoline to the already lit candle factory.

The energy from “You Tear The World In Two” slows and slides into “Sea Of Sound” where the guitars are less ferocious and more reminiscent of the sun coming over the water. The glistening ability is Pale Saints method of the madness. “Sea Of Sound” is the first real moment of showing any sense of a slowdown before the following track, “True Coming Dream” which jumps right back into the mosh pits.

The build-up and work of “True Coming Dream” is a ray of energy that instills power once again to the lungs. With the tension on the rise, Masters on guitar and Naysmith on vocals pair together like monsters of the track. In the two minutes and 30 seconds, “True Coming Dream” is painted vividly and has these splashes of light blue and pale pinks that burn over wax.

“Language Of Flowers” comes to be one of the final tracks of The Comforts of Madness saga where the ocean waves cascade over the audience. With each note that is struck through the speakers, Naysmith’s vocals pour and cement the production to be one made of loose and intimate play styles that borders more on beauty than the demise.

Sinking further and falling deeper, Pale Saints are a nice break away from the dangerous and more into letting emotion take the drive. The 41 minutes spent is less abrupt, and is a planned adventure into the setting sands.

Misc. Day – Global Gale

Who knew that annihilation could be so much fun! In 2013, Texas’s big beat, Power Trip combines the call back to an iconic thrash sound with a new age wonder of crushing oppression with each thunderous axe kick.

Their debut record with Southern Lord Records, Manifest Decimation is a wrecking ball through the speakers from the title track alone. “Manifest Decimation” opens and boils back the skin like that dream scene in Terminator 2. As certain doom introduces itself through a bone-splitting execution work, the lineup of Power Trip becomes the main intrigue of the sound.

Forming through vocalist Riley Gale who resembles less of a Ronnie James Dio and more of a Chuck Schuldiner from Death fame. The harsh and mighty shouts pair in perfect synchronicity with Blake Ibanez on lead guitar and Nick Stewart on rhythm guitar. The percussion is handled by Chris Ulsh and the bass comes directly from Chris Whetzel.

The engagement comes from a transition that includes some atmospheric nearly prison-planet uses of chains that transition into the track “Conditioned To Death” where Power Trip becomes master of their own demise. Much of the thrash sound is prone to mosh pits and “Conditioned To Death” is no different. The elements are on Power Trip’s side as through each riff from both Ibanez and Stewart, there is an overarching reach of violence and power through conquering.

This is also the first use of a quote-unquote “classic” styled guitar solo that drops in octave and becomes reverbed through the instrumentation. As the faster more noodling style begins, images of spiked belts and leather gauntlets flood into the mind. Where the neon age died out and “Conditioned To Death” takes 80s influence as a complete revamp of the technique. Adding those small samples that describe, “I’m gonna die, you know what that’s like don’t you,” or the chains that shake like a wanting to be freed mental slave continues to orchestrate an ecosystem for Power Trip.

The sun doesn’t often shine on Power Trip’s mind, but “Crossbreaker” takes a different approach to the first introductory handshake as Whetzel on bass and Ulsh on percussion are the only things that get first crack with the audience. A simple drum and bass groove, Power Trip then forms like a multi-leveled Hydra with each section coming back with more heads.

One falls off and is transferred to this shadow realm where another instrumentalist takes the original place. As the guitars falter to be just backing sounds, vocalist Riley  Gale becomes the focal point with backing shouts coming from other members of Power Trip.

Essentially Power Trip is this unkillable machine that just won’t stay dead. From start to finish, Manifest Decimation is quick to love on the ears and a hellscape for the mind, burning like the eternal flames that no rain could extinguish.

New Music – The Black Goat

Under the guise of the darkened shoguns that once ran Imperial Japan, DJ Muggs treads through nightfall over vast sand dunes with nothing but an MPC as his primary weapon. On his instrumental project Dies Occidendum, rules of honor are the only thing that abides through the 10 track project.

Opening with “Incantation,” the tongue twists that create the background of the instrumental are covered by an earworm of a percussive sound set. Working in more authentic sounds, the rattling clicks of breaking bamboo against itself is the hi-hat, giving the spacious underlying kick drum to be a messiah in this cloud of dust.

DJ Muggs who uses fear and provocation as a natural reflex becomes intertwined on Dies Occidendum like a black widow who spins a meticulous web. As tracks fade into “The Chosen One,” DJ Muggs dawns the hood of a million moons and begins to stalk with these ethereal symphonies remarking each step of progress. When the snaps of snares introduce themselves, the pieces of this daunting puzzle appear faster than the striking cobra, and more deadly than 100 kilos of gunpowder.

It’s hard not to become wrapped in each instrumental as the sectioning and layering uses samples for only a moment to describe a story, on “The Chosen One,” the crooked hand of fate reflects our narration. Describing from an unknown source, “You draw black, very appropriate… don’t you agree?” As the sample ends, the production ramps up to a boiling point that melts skin and entombs the listener in molten ash hotter than the surfaces of any star.

The fourth track of the northern lights is “Nigrum Mortem” which has more roots in jazz and freeform instrumentation than any hip-hop styling. The guitars and strings featured are entirely fuzz-ridden; becoming more of an entity than any pronounceable instrument.

The percussion follows suit but instead of playing as a backing building character, the drum set takes the forefront and leads on “Nigrum Mortem.” Within the spinal makeup, there is a solo that seems to last nearly the whole track.

Dies Occidendum is provocative and illustrative through these sections of instrumentals without needing to make an entrance. The build and natural progression of the work is able to speak for itself. The stylings of The Black Goat that continues to reappear as a message of fairy tales that mix with the occult, orchestrating death through the cards.
