Misc. Day – In The Lap Of The Master

a1045276504_10-2.jpgAs the last of the wreckage falls around the crashing waves of the raging sea, the sand began to rumble around me. It was a gentle, almost comforting vibration that seeped into the sand in-between my feet. The pitch-black night was distant, but the overbearing brightness of the sunset had finally died. Nightfall would soon begin to overcome me, it would engulf the world that surrounded me and the crashing waves was going to be a siren song. The final thing I would hear before the near-endless black would fall upon me, shadowing both the sun and all life on Earth.

I was still recovering from the showcase on Friday and wanted to do something a little different with my Misc. Monday. I wanted to just bring upon to the audience, a higher power of music. Something that taps into the methods of relaxation and something that doesn’t need over-analyzed like my usual Monday’s. I worked to put on this show for last Friday and I feel as though I don’t deserve any breaks, and I am not… but I just wanted to instead focus on some sort of recuperating for any one that came out and supported me. Sounds Of Isha is something I discovered a few months ago and have been going back to more and more as I begin to mature and understand the tides of life shifting around me. This post is not going to be a reoccurring thing, but I do need to get some new styles of music up on the site. I will not start doing reviews of country music or noise, but I might shift it up a little and start doing more new music than old music. My Misc. Day might become obsolete, or even my Classic Day as I feel that they are fun to write about and they do give me a sense of gratuity when I finish; however, I am at a stage in my life where I must take a professional stance, and a less-professional, more approachable stance. I will never write like I wear a suit and tie, I will never start selling out, and I sure as hell am not going to stop performing/producing shows.

I was happy with how the last showcase turned out, I was slightly disappointed in the numbers; but the quality is always more important than quantity. There are going to be incredible and immaculate changes in my life coming, I personally thank anyone that has stuck by side, reading these either sporadically or every single post. Putting on showcases and writing is something that I work on everyday and while I am no where near where I want to be, Matt’s Music Mine has connected me with artists and people that I would have never been able to share a spotlight with. People I would have never been able to speak with, meet, or even call my friends. That is why, I will continue to find new music, continue to find music that people need to listen to. This is all I have left; I have nothing else in my life that I want to do as a career path.

This Industry will spit you out, chew you up, take everything from you, and reuse you until you are emotionally and physically drained. I am working everyday to not crush those around me, but to instead lift them up and give them a platform that they would have never had before. I am no martyr; I am nothing more than an incredibly lonely kid with an inseparable love for music. Music has always been a coping mechanism for me, it has always been the thing that I am able to use to make the sun shine brighter, the rain last a little longer, and to make my life more bearable. This isn’t a diary and I know that I am beginning to ramble, but as Matt’s Music Mine turned One this year, I wanted to at least say that I am truly grateful for those who worked with me and the people in the future that I can work with. You know who you are…

I will say once again, I am going to keep doing this until my bones are eventually grinded back to the refined powder and I am whisked away by the wind, there is no obstacle too great, no barrier too bold, no person that can stand in my way. I have a small, but humbling following now… And I can’t wait to see where I am next year at this time, two years from this time, ten years from this time.

More good things on the way and the P.M.A… That Positive Mental Attitude will lead me in the right direction, The odds are stacked against me, but I will eventually succeed. And Sounds Of Isha’s, In The Lap Of The Master is something I listen to, in order to understand the things in my mind. To try and make sense of some of the problems on my brain, Thank you again… and it is nowhere but UP from here.

MMM’s Musical Exhibition Pt. III – Artist Showcase III

Bill_Waves_Barbecues_Blues-frontBill Niels is a Pittsburgh legend around the underground rap scene, working with Mac Miller and the Most Dope crew as far back as Mac goes, building his own clothing brand, “Daily Bread” up to a global status, and continuing to do live shows as Bill Waves still shows a shining hope for the future of entertainment in the Steel City. Waves, Niels, Bill, whatever you call him, people show respect to his name as a wordsmith that has some immaculate styling’s; someone that can rock the microphone and shake the stage too. He moves into the spotlight with his latest project Barbecues & Blues; taking the veil of mystery off for only a moment, before dashing back to the damp alleys and shadows of Pittsburgh.

Niels cuts his teeth with the opening track, “Point Breeze (Prod. By: Thrty) where Bill navigates through a lo-fi situation of production. Niels is hazy on Barbecues & Blues, appearing almost behind a cloud of smoke as he describes, “I am not smiling till I level my head, I got blessed, God’s child but the devil’s my friend”. There is a constant level of coasting behind Bill’s always adapting style and the way that he presents himself is such a raw and natural level of emotion. He does not play with himself or the audience, pulling them along in a list of fake or fictional stories; Bill Waves is one of the realest artists in his craft and gives a window, wide-eyed look into who he is. On following tracks, “Graphite (feat. Fam Ross, Prod. By: SLR)”, Bill moves in a similar fashion that illustrates his strength to tell a story and to entertain as well as teach. The production by SLR uses filtered guitars and rattling hi-hats that vary to create an approachable, but head-bobbing instrumental that works significantly well with Waves’ and Ross’s verses. The two act as a dynamic-duo of classy, but calloused rhymers of practical real life supervillains.

But there are moments on Barbecues & Blues where Bill takes the record in a completely different direction, almost nose-diving toward the opposite lanes with “Blue (feat. Tommy, Prod. By: Young Bicycle) and “Moms Pain” where Niels is more wide awake than ever. His conscious attempts to reflect on his personal moments, like the very shadowed track “Blue” where Tommy acts as a beautiful seamstress, stitching together the ugliness of Bill’s often times rough-spoken dialogue between himself. Tommy who is another Pittsburgh artist has worked with Bill previously, but on Barbecues & Blues; Tommy is a siren that lures the listener away from the crashing waves of Bill’s inner psyche. She is a wonderful tool in Bill’s inventory to create a duality within his music and the following track, “Moms Pain” is similar as well.

DHCHym-XcAEg2II-2.jpgDepressed, drowned, but also reminiscing about the past times where Bill Waves explains on his hook/re-phrase, “I just wanna be rich, see from the other side. All I need’s a dollar for every time my mother cried”. The emotional status that Bill reaches into and extracts is sullen, but the change of tone is welcome and is necessary in order to make his livelier tracks stand out as larger pieces of the puzzle. Bill Waves is an enigma, hidden behind his quick-wits and Golden-Age Boom-Bap styled production is a truly creative visionary that built his own path by himself. It’s apparent that Waves can tell a heartwarming story and switch it up just as quick and tell some truth behind his words.

The world is lucky to be graced by someone that is not afraid to put themselves out there, someone that manages to illustrate a great and overbearing sense of pain behind his words; continuing on and inspiring the youth of today with his message. The world is lucky to have a person like Bill Waves, a fresh MC with a lot to give to most, a new mind with new ideas to many, and someone that would be called a friend by all.

MMM’s Musical Exhibition PT. III – Artist Showcase II

a2475245943_10LiveFromTheCity has been making a name for himself ever since first appearing on the scene with his mixtapes, features, and now his albums that remix the classiness of the golden-era of hip-hop with a new-age style of rap power. His musical style is one that he has created himself, standing out in the crowd with his newest full project, You Deserve It. From the nominations for being The King Of Pittsburgh’s Hip-Hop from the Pittsburgh City Paper, to the journeys of rocking the stage on 1Hood day, or catching him at some of the clubs around Pittsburgh completely destroying the stage, Live in the newest member to stand up on the war with music.

Live describes on his BandCamp page, “This is for you. Thank you for all your love and support during this journey. As a token of my appreciation, I have released this project (You Deserve It) for free…”. Live makes it well-known that he truly treasures the fan base that boosted him to this higher level of learning, on the opening track “Do You Believe In Angels?”, he is compassionate and reflects on how his choices have led him to this place. He explains over a beat reminiscing of something that The Alchemist would produce, “I was born in the ghetto unto an angel that raised me, never marched to the same beat as them, my rhythm was different”. Live then moves on to the later stages in his life where he describes the stepping stones that would eventually become his career as a hip-hop artist. LiveFromTheCity explains, “A young nigga from Wilkinsburg that should still be hoopin’, four projects later, I still have something to prove then”. It is a humbling journey that Live expresses through and on his later track “Guilt”, Live describes how he sees his home and the changes that occurred after he left.

The production on “Guilt” is a rampant and frantic use of piano chords and boom-bap percussion that tilts toward an aggressive styling that works to boost Live’s lyrical output as he describes, “Have you seen my side of town lately? It’s a disgrace, and it often makes me question if I should be the face of such an ugly oppression”. This is where Live begins to illustrate his personal side and where his upbringing brought him. You Deserve It is a personal recollection of Live’s own journey through life and is a look through his eyes. His style is brash, but there are moments where he is able to possess a shining glimmer of hope behind his verse and display the change he wants to see in the world. This is apparent on his final track, “Low Expectations” where Live explains behind church organs that he is moving on through the hate and the doubters that expressed their disapproval of his career path. He is focused on moving forward and not trying to change the past, but instead curve the path for himself in the future.

You Deserve It is almost a call to Live’s self, he understands that he has the talent to make it big, so he continues on and insists that he himself deserves it. He works everyday to move to where he is now, and the future looks brighter than ever for Live.

MMM’S MUSICAL EXHIBTION PT. III – ARTIST SHOWCASE I

a1722485016_10-2If the 90’s could be reimagined and repackaged through a modern age, Javed would come the closest to making a time machine of sound and one of the dopest records to come out of hip-hop in a long time. The level of class that Javed reinvigorates into his music and which then, in turn creates a new contemporary level flow and style that is impossible to replicate, and even better to hear first hand.

His project Window II Your Soul is like jumping right back into the golden era of hip-hop where boom-bap reigned supreme and was the king of sound. Not only does Javed adapt this subsection to be his own, but he dominates the court and is a step above the competition. From the first opening self-titled track “Window II Your Soul” to the playful “N64(No Games),” Javed uses witty wordplay, clapping bass lines, and a focus on making each instrument feel unique and stand alone in the crowd of sound. While the first track is a sample of Madvillain, Javed still uses the instrumental to begin a hyping and uses a seguing motion into the first authentic track of Window II Your Soul, “Blindest Eyes.” Javed makes hip-hop approachable and something that anyone could hear and fall in love with. It was a style that seemed to almost disappear, but Javed makes sure that it stays better than ever.

Even moving on into the later tracks of Window II Your Soul, Javed continues with the same level of energy and classic style that he began with. Not only does Javed create a world of sound, but he invites the listener in and has authenticity behind his voice. As one of the later tracks, “Sweater” is a perfect example of being able to feel every lyric behind Javed and truly make Window II Your Soul transcend just being a collection of tracks but to actually feel like a journey through sound. Javed is a visionary in the craft and Window II Your Soul is a buried diamond in a rough of hip-hop.

The final track “Deadly Sins,” while short, is a strong personal recollection of his past life and what he can see in his future. Hip-hop is a universal bonding movement and Javed is a local leader of Pittsburgh but has the potential to branch out and make the United States his home. From his lyrical style, boom-bap revival, and prowess to succeed, Javed is an artist that needs to be under the spotlight.
