Classic Day – 25TaLyfe

Who could have known that 25 years later, serving a capital offense for lyrical murder, comes GZA The Genius with Liquid Swords and blades lined with opponent’s blood. Through thin, paper-esque slices, GZA is encapsulating of both murderous undertones and the honor of a fair kill.

Opening with the iconic title track, “Liquid Swords” is taken from Shogun Assassin where The Lone Wolf and his cub begin a tale of decapitation, betrayal, and ultimately unruly iron wills. The Cub at this point, explains, “When I was little, my father was famous. He was the greatest samurai in the empire… He wasn’t scared of the Shogun, but the Shogun was scared of him. Maybe that was the problem.” As the bounce from GZA taps on the strings with basement 808 bass and a snap on the snare, his vocals here are a cold reflection of the story from the Cub.

He describes, “Fake niggas get flipped in mic fights, I swing swords and cut clowns. Shit is too swift to bite, you record and write it down.” GZA continues, “I flow like the blood on a murder scene, like a syringe. On some wild out shit to insert a fiend.” Even as the introduction is a captivating tumble, GZA is able to institute surgical precision with a scalpel instead of katana.

“Living In The World Today” is a low-tuned creep with these carnivals of horns and percussive cracks almost as good as nuggets to a basehead. Recruiting Method Man and RZA for the hook, the three Wu generals describe, “Well if you livin’ in the world today. You be hearing the slang that the Wu-Tang say. Niggas that front, we don’t have ‘em, so we blast ‘em alright, well okay.” Almost as intimidating as the production he rhymes on; GZA is deadly as he moves into his verse and has some strict flows here. Sticking to the script of death before dishonor, GZA describes, “MC’s be out like bank robbers, fleeing the scene to be the sole survivor. DJ the getaway driver, tried to dip but he dive, I socialize on vocal vibes. On tracks stabbed up with razor-sharp knives.”

Even later tracks like “I Gotcha Back” where the instrumentation is representative of a monster movie stemming from Monster Island. GZA becomes Godzilla, rhymes that swing from building to building leaving nothing but misery in its wake. While only a sample on Liquid Swords, his final message is captivating coming from The Lone Wolf And Cub.

Illustrating, “When cut across the neck, a sound like wailing winter winds is heard, they say. I’d always hoped to cut someone like that someday.” As the voice struggles to push the last rites out, he describes, “To hear that sound, but to have it happen to my own neck is… ridiculous,” before the narrator gasps for air and falls a corpse in the snow-filled arena.

Liquid Swords is a similar beast, but entirely able to stand among the grass stalks, wind whirling across a barren wasteland of sound. From 36 Chambers to the mountains of a mystical land, GZA earns the title of genius.

Misc. Day – Die Faster

Nothing about Holy Death speaks of rebirth or the passage that a cold demise brings, instead on their new EP Deus Mortis, the desert stretches farther and is more sprawling than before.

Tuned low and more into a vein of dooming hardcore, Holy Death drops off only four tracks in 13 minutes, the shortest of all their current releases so far. But the limited run time adds to the approachability of the record, begging for it to be spun as soon as it ends.

Opening with “Ritualistic Pain,” the ambient drumming and atmospheric feedback from the strings here is ceremonial and droning. Scrawled in messages upon cave walls, “Ritualistic Pain” is a steady slowdown before the crushing crawl toward venom within the speakers. Acting almost as a lumbering giant, the following of “Spiritual Degradation” is closer in tune to an arching cast with vocals that resemble closer to growls than any narration.

The build-up here is what truly captures and when the dominoes then tumble, it creates this chain reaction of emotional torture. Essentially, Holy Death wants to break over the wall of security and blur the lines of art and physical pain.

Even on the title track “Deus Mortis” which uses these foreboding church-esque chants to sculpt a backing, Holy Death stays incredibly vigilant at pushing through as a marching squad of misery. The guitar and bass here are deafening and when combining both the percussion and vocals alongside, the mix is astounding. Something built for monuments to fall and teeth to shatter, Holy Death is engaging and keeps the attention.

While that attention is only for 13 minutes, the content inside here on Deus Mortis is fascinating to unfold. Progressing almost as if it was one extensively long track, the consistency of Deus Mortis is captivating and builds mausoleums for the foundation. Even coming off their other works like M M X I X or Celestial Throne Ov Grief, there is a similar vein of sound but the progression is apparent.

Deus Mortis hits harder, recovers faster, and is able to bend further as time continues on with Holy Death. No matter the release, the textures and flexibility that Holy Death protrude continues to make them so digestible even when the fires burn out.

New Music – Basket Weaver

Two masters of atmosphere and grim undertones, Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou are established partners in an endless wave of misery. Whether the rough grinding from Thou that acts as punishing as it is enticing or the enthralling crawl to shimmering instrumentation from Rundle; May Our Chambers Be Full is a seven course meal.

Opening with “Killing Floor,” May Our Chambers Be Full is almost a reprieve with moments of sheer beauty underneath all that pain. Through death comes a rebirth, a cycle that continues to format and fall victim to sweeping riffs and the ivory taste of Rundle’s angelic vocals. Thou acts as the executioner for most of May Our Chambers Be Full and the instrumentation follows more towards their hand rather than Rundle’s.

While combining elements of both can be an immaculately difficult procedure, both Thou and Rundle seem symbiotic at points where working together feels natural. As they have toured and shared a stage together, hearing a combination of both the lumbering giant and the crushing monster is as threatening as it is electric.

Especially when reaching “Out Of Existence” where Rundle’s vocal performance is a highlight of May Our Chambers Be Full and becomes exemplified upon Thou’s hallowed ground of performance. Digging roots deeper into the soil, Rundle describes “The slender sun receding where pain and thought departed. The hymns that illness breathes into our hearts, a seat.” While the thumping percussion and eliciting guitar from Thou crashes like a train into the audience seems to happen in fell swoops. Rundle continues on, “It sings in silver threats and golden phrases turning, a verse no one forgets. The song of all things burning.” The instrumental shifts lower and lower until it feels almost underground.

Thou’s Bryan Funck then immediately jumps into the mix describing, “This one is predetermined. This one will find no favor. This one is weight unburdened, dragging down our lives.” The sudden transitional period is favorited through harsh atmospheric noise and consistent backing walls of sound. Running headfirst into the dirt, Thou and Rundle bury themselves beneath layers of earth, collecting tombstones in the form of tracks on their way toward Elysian Fields.

May Our Chambers Be Full is at times much more approachable and assembles more as if Rundle was the maestro behind layering and production. With “Magickal Cost,” a track that is still upbeat in percussion and progression, the less thunderous amp rampage and more subtle work is refined and almost a diamond in an incredibly rugged place. The string work here between both the guitars and bass are fantastic and showcase a real talent from both Rundle and Thou musically.

Then as the explosions are heard in the distance, “Magickal Cost” segues back into a weeping wheel of both denial and hurt. If sound could talk, “Magickal Cost” would be screaming in agony that transposes the basic nature of existence, never having a secure foundational ledge to stand on. Instead, the track continues to put the listener on a rug, only to pull it out again and again before footing can be established. One of the better displays on the record, “Magickal Cost” burns into the brain for its adaptability and willingness to switch the tone as an artistic extension of sinking.

May Our Chambers Be Full is an incredibly strong release under both belts for Rundle and Thou, spending much of the time as allies instead of enemies. The writing is poetic but can draw personal reference without lifting the velvet curtain too much. When death calls, both Rundle and Thou are at the ready with electric blades replacing the acceptance of a quiet demise.
