This is not a top 10 but instead a top 11. This was a long time coming and I was incredibly hopeful and excited for the year of 2018 with some sudden drops and long-awaited releases that pretty much defined the year for me. Music is the best thing that man has ever created and you cannot deny that the creativity that certain individuals face through adversity is simply immaculate.
Anyway, here is a celebration of the albums that meant the most to me this year, either between what I listened to the most, the sentimental feelings, or just for being creative and raw endeavors.
Thanks for sticking by me for near two-and-a-half years…

“Still breaming off the top of Triflin’ , Nickelus F. displays a wide discography with some notable rhymers and producers in the past. But now, able to make his own beats, craft his own style, and work the best within himself; there is a need for Nick to bring his all. In a rare breed sense, Nickelus F. holds no bar back, delivering on every aspect on Stuck . The album here, is entirely almost perfect, Stuck is entertaining and holds the listener’s attention without ever becoming too long or drawn out even by the final, 14th track.”
“With many of the tracks talking about the re-discovery of love, the smooth style of Green, or the bitterness of breaking up; Al Green covers similar topics but makes each track feel as a new journey. He keeps the action continually interesting while relying on the instrumentation changes to keep a flow of motion. “
“The band that never forms a true sound, The Garden shifts again as they move into “Shameless Shadow”. It is cheerful and has a polka performance on the percussion with horns and jazz influenced progression that is an avant-garde dream. The random schizophrenic synth pieces fit into this broken puzzle that has no end pieces. Not that the band is missing anything, Mirror Might Steal Your Charm is incredibly full and well-rounded in a sense of adaptability. The album just does not seem to have much structure behind, making it an experimentally outstanding album that can be recognized for the leap of faith it takes in progression. “
“The abstract style of producing is what helps Black Milk achieve such grand, near boundary-breaking heights on FEVER . Especially on the single and video, “Laugh Now Cry Later” that is heavily influenced by African jungle percussion of bongos and upright bass lines that resemble a complex jazz standout. “From raps to movies, to black is beauty. Cop didn’t feel the same, felt he had to shoot me. Laugh now, cry later. All fun and games, screaming out gang gang, until lil homie pull up, put a bullet through a brain. Laugh now, cry later.” It is touching and actually a relatable concept that shows a sense of high perception to his surroundings. Black Milk has tons of these quotable gems throughout FEVER and manages to combine them all into a forty-minute project.”
“This is the nature of No Mountains In Manhattan though, Wiki uses artists that have varying styles and varying levels of originality to deliver one of the hottest projects of the year. Without a shadow of a doubt, Wiki stands tall among the crowd, a monument of rap’s strongest artists. A pile of gold at the end of the rainbow of musical ability; He does not imitate, and he certainly does not replicate. Wiki is his own man, not standing high above the clouds, but instead standing with his fellow New Yorkers in the street day to day, fighting with and for them. ”
“DOOM is also lyrically on a different level, light years ahead of most of the rappers around him. His flow, bars, and style is one of a kind, making is music feel as more than just music. DOOM makes every single release feel like watching Saturday morning cartoons where everything is done with bravado and the Villain always wins. ”
Not only is Ace one of the most genuine people that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, but he also knows himself and stays as authentic as possible. There is never a doubt in my mind that Ace is not being 100 percent with his work, He never lacks, staying a consistent and optimistic tone in a lane that few could conquer like he has and will do.
“The record strikes that childlike wonder that once instilled the hearts of young adolescents piling into a car to hit the local amusement park. It places the highs and lows of riding on the Steel Phantom, hitting the outstanding and monumental icon of Scott ’s face that is placed as a golden idol to the greatest attraction Houston has ever been able to offer since The AstroWheel or The Bamboo Shoot.”
“Truly VETERAN is genius, the workings of a criminal mastermind who can shift and blend the emotional stance with a new tendency. Almost without fail; JPEGMAFIA marches along this war path that feels more as a descent into madness, taking the listener with him on this ride into trauma through sound. It is audible to hear what could only be considered as genre-lacking and directionless noise with tracks “Germs” or “Rainbow Six” which acts more as interludes with these booming instrumentals placed in-between. These types of tracks flood into VETERAN and form the backbone of some of the more highlighted tracks that rely on the production to succeed. JPEGMAFIA ’s voice is for the most part a rambling mess that forms well over the similar production.”
“The theory of music that follows A Tribe Called Quest is deeply rooted in the way that the production can be easily manipulated into any situation. Whether being played for the car speakers on a highway drive, or at a wedding, to the oldest of music lovers; nearly everyone on the planet can attain some sort of factor that makes Midnight Marauders a substantial monument in music history.”
MATT’S MUSIC MINE’S NUMBER ONE ALBUM OF THE YEAR
“Each track on TESTING feels so incredibly different and able to stand entirely on its own. There is no need for any more energetic displays, no need for emotional tear-fuel, TESTING in the first three tracks is better than most entire discographies coming from signed artists. With a total of 15 tracks, there is not a single missed step and Rocky comes back harder than ever. He stands as a capitalization on the artist format, challenging the form of what it takes to create a perfect “rap” album, the perfect “musical” album, and the perfect display of art.”
